Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

This is not a romance, but it is about love

Two kids meet in a hospital gaming room in 1987. One is visiting her sister, the other is recovering from a car crash. The days and months are long there. Their love of video games becomes a shared world — of joy, escape and fierce competition. But all too soon that time is over, fades from view.

When the pair spot each other eight years later in a crowded train station, they are catapulted back to that moment. The spark is immediate, and together they get to work on what they love – making games to delight, challenge and immerse players, finding an intimacy in digital worlds that eludes them in their real lives. Their collaborations make them superstars.

This is the story of the perfect worlds Sadie and Sam build, the imperfect world they live in, and of everything that comes after success: Money. Fame. Duplicity. Tragedy.

CW: Gun violence, death, suicide, car accident, death of parent, pregnancy, aborption

Review

This book was so hyped that I wanted to love it too and be part of it. But sadly, I didn’t like the premise of this book and decided to DNF it instead of continuing it and falling into a reading slump.

Let me tell you, I tried several times to read it; I even started to listen to it while reading to have a better focus on it. However, I struggled to concentrate when reading it due to two main points: the characters and the writing.

I found the characters just insufferable. Alone or together, they just irk me. Also, I found their relationship toxic and don’t want to read about it. The flashbacks are here to understand their friendship. Still, I think it makes it more complex than it needs to be, especially as sometimes you don’t even know that you jump back in time.

The writing was too heavy, and most of the time, I was lost in the sentences. Do they need to be so long? I don’t think so. Also, you have a big part about videogame; this is how they meet, but I was lost by it. I wanted so much to focus on it as it felt interesting. However, the delivery wasn’t there for me.

I must stay away from very hyped books as it’s not the first time I’ve DNF one or given a low rating.
