Review

This was a strange but difficult to put down book. I had the feeling to glide through the book.

In the beginning, the main character reminds me of Eleanor Oliphant as she struggles to fit into her own life and society. However, as you learn about her and her past, you understand that she needs a therapist, as she didn’t grieve in a way that makes her play the role of herself in a life that doesn’t correspond to her. For a good part of the book, I asked myself if she was aware of that fact, and discovering her as events happened in her life was a great thing. I was so invested in learning a part of her that she hid for a long time.

I like how this book asks about what is a cat lady, even if it’s not the main point of it. In our society, when you don’t conform to a case, you still need to have a role, and sometimes you are a cat lady. Whether you have reasons or not to be considered like it’s always a bad thing. However, when you read this story, even if it’s fictional, you find it totally okay and not bad as you have her background story and the reason for her choice.

Did I cry while reading this book? Yep, and a lot, especially at the end. I recognised a part of me in her. Her relationship with her cat is strange, not normal at the start of the book, but as her life evolves, her cat is a constant in her life, whether it be difficult or easier times. I can’t imagine being I her situation even if I know it will happened one day.

It is a character-driven book that needs to be known, especially when you have a cat or are qualified as a cat lady.
