my reading summary: August 2022

I’m so happy about my August reading motivation! I have done everything I could to not fall into a reading slump again. I DNFed a book, mixed Olympus TBR and mood reading, and read at least a chapter every day.

Also, and the best thing ever, I bought 33 books when I went to London. I know it’s a lot, but first, it’s my birthday month, and second, you can’t imagine how it is to have that much choice in bookstores. Yeah, we have English bookshops in Paris, but they don’t have as much choice. So I mainly bought a ton of hardcover and purchased a book I already have (and read) in its hardcover format. This book-shopping session was what I needed, and it encouraged me to continue reading for the rest of the month.

Let’s start with the stats!

Statistics

I read thirteen books in the month, including a book from last month that I finished and a DNF. With all that, I read a total of 2,745 pages, an average of 88 pages per day. I spent 31 days reading for a total of 37h58min, including 1h15min of an audiobook. The average rating for this month is 3.50 out of 5.

I read eight different genres, including Non-Fiction, which I don’t often read but am in the mood to read, and SciFi, which is entirely out of my comfort zone. But, I’m happy with it as I’m trying to diversify my reads. I mostly read my books in physical format except for one which I tried to read in mixed media (physical and audiobook), but I couldn’t do it as I was unfocused when listening to the audiobook. Also, I read the two comics in e-book format thanks to Kindle Unlimited. Now, I know that I will continue the series for one of them. Lastly, I read a lot of new authors.

(CR) = currently reading

I still don’t have any bonus card.

Here is the book I read in July, and, I put an (x) before the book in the monthly mini-review post that will be published on the September 02nd 2022.

Books

OLYMPUS TBR

(x) The Wicked + The Divine: The Faust Act by Kieron Gillen (Image Comics)

Rating: none

This is a replacement for the Hades card and the prompt hidden cover. In the beginning, I chose The Road Trip by Beth O’Leary, but I didn’t read it, so I changed to this one as it’s a collection of comics (from volumes 1 to 5), and you have all the covers of those volumes in the book.

The Accidental Medium by Tracy Whitwell (Pan MacMillan)

(Review coming September 01st)

Rating: 🫖🫖🫖🫖

This book replaces The Beautiful Ones by Silvia Moreno-Garcia for the Apollo’s prompt, a gold element on the cover. It’s a somewhat last-moment read as I DNFed the book I thought would be the last one of August.

Jobs for Girls with Artistic Flair by June Gervais (Pamela Dorman Books)

(Review coming September 07th)

Rating: none

This is officially the last book of August. As it’s a debut, it replaces The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow for the Hera card.

MAGICAL ORILIUM: AUTUMN EQUINOX

(x) Les Aristochats by Disney (Hachette Jeunesse)

(Read in French)

Rating: 🫖🫖🫖

This one was for the O for Inscription and the exam of Glyph: recollection which had the prompt to read a childhood favourite.

(x) It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey (Avon Books)

Rating: DNF @41%

This book is for the O for Lore and the exam Aeldia’s regional anthropology. The prompt was to read a book the same colour as my country’s flag, which is blue, white and red for me. It was an easy prompt as a lot of books have these colours. I simply didn’t care.

Her Majesty’s Royal Coven by Juno Dawson (Penguin Books)

Rating: 🫖🫖🫖🫖

I have a moon on the cover, and this element is essential in the book. I really like this book, which is my first from Juno Dawson. Now I need to wait for the second book in the series, but I have bought one of her backlist books. It also corresponds to the Q for Lore and the prompt Myth of Syldoris, and the prompt of a story featuring a betrayal

Appointment with Death by Agatha Christie (HarperCollins)

Rating: 🫖

This was for Hermes and a travel. I wasn’t sure there was a real one, but yes, there was one travel from Jerusalem to Petra. I didn’t like this one; it wasn’t for me at all. For the readathon, I choose it for D for Lore and the prompt desert setting for the ancient caves of Daerune exam.

To Be Taught If Fortunate by Becky Chambers (Hodder & Stoughton)

Rating: 🫖🫖🫖🫖

I choose this book for the O in Psionics & Divination, which is the Time Theory I exam. The prompt was to read a book featuring time travel. I stretch this one a little, but I now want to read Becky Chambers’ other books.

I Want To Be Where Normal People Are by Rachel Bloom (Coronet Books)

Rating: none

This book is for the Q for Psionics & Divination and the exam of Time theory II. The prompt is to read a book with the same word in the title as my last read. I read a comic to use the word “Normal” as my sameness in the title.

OTHER

(x) Ms Marvel: No Normal by G. Willow Wilson (Marvel)

Rating: none

It wasn’t for me, but I think it’s an important superhero. I read it to be able to read another book for the Orilium readathon.

(x) Komi Cherche ses Mots Vol.1 and 2 by Tomohito Oda (PIKA)

(read in French, title in English: Komi Can’t Communicate)

Rating: 🫖🫖🫖🫖

As I DNFed the previous manga series I was reading, I was searching for a new one and found this one. I only read the first two books, but for now, I really like them.

Next month, I have one of my favourite readathons: Bookoplathon. I already have done my first roll (here), so I know which is my first book. I’m so excited; it’s like Christmas for me!!

And you, which books did you read for this month? Let me know in the comment or put a 🎲.

Liz.
