my reading summary: June 2022

And I thought February was my worse month! As I said in my note #4 post here (advice: read it before continuing this one), I felt in a massive reading slump as my mental health was deteriorating and still doing it.

However, I’m still surprised by how I have done with all these struggles. Or maybe I know, thanks to the big break I took and a 48h readathon. Those readathons help so much when you struggle as you know that other people are doing it at the same time as you, and I think that’s what motivates me to read during that 48h.

Let’s start with the stats!

Statistics

Thanks to the last weekend and the Mini Star Hop that lasted 48 hours, I managed to finally read five books in the month; sadly, it includes a DNF. I also have two others that I’m yet to finish, but I hope to finish them in July. With all of that, I read a total of 1 394 pages with an average of 46 pages per day. I spent 10 days reading for a total of 21h37min. The average rating for this month is 3.67 out of 5.

I think I’m starting to slow down my romance craze as I only read two completely different ones. Otherwise, as I was mood reading, I went for different genres. And even if I struggled to focus on books this month, I was still reading in physical format. There is only one book that I read (and still read) in mixed media.

(CR) = currently reading

I still don’t have any bonus card.

Here is the book I read in June, and except for one, I didn’t write any reviews yet. They will come later, I promise.

I put an (x) before the book in the monthly mini-review post that will be published on the 02nd of July 2022.

Books

BOOK CLUB

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang (Corvus)

Rating: DNF @38%

This book was the book of May for the Cliterature Book Club, but as the live show was on the 15th of June, I decided to stretch a little. Sadly, this book wasn’t for me at all.

OTHER

(x) SpyxFamily volume 5 by Tatsuya Endo (Kurokawa)

(book read in French)

Rating: none

I wanted to read a little that day, but sadly I didn’t have the energy to read one of my current reads, so I decided to read a manga. It was also helpful as this volume was the one for me to determine if I continue or not this series (spoiler alert: I stopped.)

READATHONS

Disclaimer: all of these books were use for both Mini Star Hop and Whaterverthon.

The Unsinkable Greta James by Jennifer E. Smith (Ballantines Book)

Rating: 🫖🫖🫖

From the moment I purchased it, I wanted to read it, which was a first since the beginning of the month. With this book, I could clear three cases on the bingo board. The first was ‘The.An.A.Of.And.’, the second recently hauled and lastly, water on the cover. For the Mini Star Hop, I decided to change a little the prompt as I wasn’t mentally able to read a book of more than 400 pages. So I decided to choose a book between 300 and a maximum of 400 pages

People from my Neighborhood by Hiromi Kawakami (Soft Skull Press)

Rating: 🫖🫖🫖🫖

This was my second roll for the Mini Star Hop. I wanted to read a short book as I didn’t know what was coming next. I chose this book because the prompt was beautiful. I love the cover, it’s a miniaturist neighbourhood, and the details are stunning. I also used that book for the other readathon. The prompts that corresponded with this book were: under 300 pagesindie/self-pub and 2021 release

Neon Gods by Katee Robert (Sourcebook Casablanca)

Rating: 🫖🫖🫖🫖

To be honest, I bought this book for the Whateverthon as one of the cases on the bingo board was Dark Romance, and I didn’t have any. So for that readathon, I also used it for purple on the cover and as a favourite genre as I like reading romance. For the Mini Star Hop, it was my third roll, and it was a poll pick. As we also have this case on the bingo board and I already made the poll, I chose the second winner of that poll as I didn’t want to read a heavy fantasy book.

IN PROGRESS

Jade City by Fonda Lee (Orbit)

Progress: 41%

I wanted to read this book for a long time, but as it’s a big one, I was a little intimidated and also because I’m not used to reading heavy fantasy. So I start reading this book only in physical format, and then I added the audiobook to be able to immerse myself more in the world. I’m now nearly in the middle of the book, but I’m sure of one thing: I won’t continue the series. I can’t explain why, but I’m interested in this book but not the others.

Pandora’s Jar: Women in the Greek Myths by Natalie Haynes (Picador)

Progress: 19%

I have had my eyes on this book for a long time as it’s about two themes that I like feminism and Greek Myths. I don’t read it in one go as each chapter is a woman, so I like to pick from time to time.

This month was so horrible that I’m afraid to start July, even if I like my Olympus TBR. So now I’m just crossing my finger to be able to read a little more than in June and be in a better mindset, and maybe I will do a 48h readathon just to motivate me a little more.

And you, which books did you read for this month? Let me know in the comment!

Liz.
