Apollo by Carly Spade

You gave me freedom, Apollo.

Laurel Berg

21th book of 2022

Second book in the Contemporary Mythos series

For ballet dancer Laurel Berg, no amount of artistic expression ever seemed enough to satisfy the ravenous muse within her. Painting didn’t have enough brush strokes, music didn’t seem to have enough notes.

But when the company director announces Ace, front man of the band Apollo’s Suns would have a special appearance in their new production, she had no idea she’d be amidst the King of the Muses himself.

And when magical things start happening, things she can’t rationally explain, she’ll discover there’s more to rock star Ace than an ego the size of Mount Olympus and a dazzling smile that could put the sun to shame.

Review

I’m happy to have decided to continue this series despite the rating I gave to the first book.

I’m rooting for this couple; Laurel and Apollo are the best. They have top-notch chemistry. I loved to see their evolution together; it felt natural and genuine. It’s not only because it’s a romance book, but because they really love each other. I especially love the bickering between them, which is now one of my favourite tropes, thanks to them.

Also, you have a lot more gods in this book and some elements of their chosen life. You encounter some of the ones in the next instalments of the series, and I can’t wait to read them. One of the characters who needed to be there was Artemis (as she is Apollo’s twin sister). I love how the author personified her in the book and their link. You feel that she will have a great relationship with Laurel, like for real.

My favourite moments were the dance parts as first you have the dramas that come with being part of a company, always fun to read about. Second, the descriptions of the dance, especially Laurel’s feelings, were like being there and seeing it. Also, it helps to create that link between Apollo and Laurel, which is stunning to read about.

This is, for now, my favourite book of the series; I hope it will be the same for the other ones.

Liz.
