The Maid by Nita Prose

I learned to doubt myself and my perceptions of the world around me. I do realize I’m different, you know, different from most. What I perceive isn’t what you perceive.

Molly Gray

10th book of 2022

Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by.

Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life’s complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job. She delights in donning her crisp uniform each morning, stocking her cart with miniature soaps and bottles, and returning guest rooms at the Regency Grand Hotel to a state of perfection.

But Molly’s orderly life is upended the day she enters the suite of the infamous and wealthy Charles Black, only to find it in a state of disarray and Mr. Black himself dead in his bed. Before she knows what’s happening, Molly’s unusual demeanor has the police targeting her as their lead suspect. She quickly finds herself caught in a web of deception, one she has no idea how to untangle. Fortunately for Molly, friends she never knew she had unite with her in a search for clues to what really happened to Mr. Black—but will they be able to find the real killer before it’s too late?

Review

This book was so promising but it has a lot of flaws and even if something makes you continue with it and you can sometimes overcome them, sometimes it’s impossible.

In the beginning, the character reminds me of Eleanore Oliphant, but as the story progress, you see a big difference between them. I have the feeling in this book that the main character, Molly, is playing a role. Sometimes she sees things but doesn’t perceive them right, and sometimes, she perceives everything right from the start, especially when you arrive near the “revelations” and everything in less than one week.

You have different plots in this story, but it feels more like three different stories, which don’t have any links, in one. It’s not that I don’t understand the connections between the story, but they felt forced. I think that’s why I didn’t feel any tension in this book. Also, the story is quite predictable, and the only element that can be surprising isn’t, in addition, being unbelievable. Finally, the timeline of the prologue is a little strange as it is said for the title of this part, “Several days later”, when it’s a few months later.

To finish with the book’s flaws, let’s talk about Cheryl. She is a side character that isn’t a great person, especially toward Molly. And here comes my problem with her. I don’t understand why she acts like that at all. You don’t have any explanation, and it bothers me a lot.

On a more positive side, this book is an easy read. When you start to read it, you can quickly finish it as something is gripping in it. You don’t have a lot of places, but they are well-described and in detail as Molly is a detail-oriented person. Also, this book will make you want to eat
crumpets. I don’t know how many times this word comes in the book.

Overall, a pretty predictable book that has a je ne sais quoi that makes you read it.

Liz.
