Summary

Mila is used to being alone. Maybe that’s why she said yes to the opportunity: living in this remote place, among the flowers and the fog and the crash of waves far below.

But she hadn’t known about the ghosts.

Newly graduated from high school, Mila has aged out of the foster care system. So when she’s offered a job and a place to stay at a farm on an isolated part of the Northern California Coast, she immediately accepts. Maybe she will finally find a new home, a real home. The farm is a refuge, but also haunted by the past traumas its young residents have come to escape. And Mila’s own terrible memories are starting to rise to the surface.

Review

It’s a book that I have wanted to read for a long time, and I’m so happy I read it.

This young adult paranormal book follows Mila, a young girl who accepts a job on a remote farm as a teacher. However, as the days go by, she discovers that ghosts haunt the farm. Also, the more she is staying, the more her past resurface.

The story is short and fast-paced, but you have so much in it. Two elements make you dive into the story, Mila’s past, which helps you understand her behaviour and her empathy. Then the atmosphere which as dark as it’s luminous. Finally, you have a little suspense that makes you read to know its explanation.

The ending surprised me a lot; first, I didn’t think this explanation would be this one, but I found it beautiful. Second, I liked how she just wanted to protect people despite her past, even if she may be in danger.

This book is about resilience and is very emotional, but it’s a beautiful book.

Liz.
