the once and future witches by Alix E. Harrow

48th book of 2021

Reading period: June 05th 2021 – June 12th 2021

Summary

In 1893, there’s no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box.

But when the Eastwood sisters–James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna–join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women’s movement into the witch’s movement. Stalked by shadows and sickness, hunted by forces who will not suffer a witch to vote-and perhaps not even to live-the sisters will need to delve into the oldest magics, draw new alliances, and heal the bond between them if they want to survive.

There’s no such thing as witches. But there will be.

Review

I had a great time reading this book. I didn’t have any expectations, but it surpasses them.

This book has everything that I like sisterhood, witches, and suffragette. Also, it has a great diversity represented, and I found that it gives a broader insight into history.

The three sisters were so different, and even if sometimes Juniper was too wild, for me, they all have a purpose in the book, and you can clearly see the link between them. I also love discovering who they are and their past, and how they act toward each other.
The other characters were also so interesting as we discover their story through their stories and spells and the city through their eyes.

This book was like reading a fairytale but a lot longer and for adult. The writing was stunning; I love those flowery, dreamy writing. I am always glad to come back to these books as it takes more time to read them, and it feels like a real break in the day as you are transported in the fictional world.

I wanted to read this book for a long time, but I am glad I did it. Now I need to buy the other books from this author and be back with her writing style and characters.

Liz.
