dothethingathon May 2021

Hello everyone,

Last week, I participated in the DoTheThingAThon hosted by Ashleigh from Frolic Through Fiction (her Youtube channel.)

The concept

The idea of this readathon is to complete, or make a huge step, in the goals you decide at the beginning of the year. So you don’t have any strict rules, you choose the prompts and the books. It lasts for one week so from the 24th of May to the 30th.

During this readathon, you have daily reading sprints. On weekdays there is one in the evening, and on the weekend you have two of them (afternoon and evening.) So you have a total of nine reading sprints.

The prompts

As you don’t have specific prompts, it’s fun to create one that corresponds to your goals or bookshelves. As one of my goals at the beginning of the year was to read more ARCs and that I have two of them that will be released on the same date (10th of June), I decided to read both of them.

The books

The two e-ARCs that I needed to read were The Lucky Escape and Widowland.

These two books are diametrically opposed; one is a romance, and the other a feminist dystopia. So I decided to start with the romance as I just finished a big book a day before. It took me three days to read it, and then I started the dystopia, which took me four days to read.

  • The Lucky Escape by Laura Jane Williams: Annie’s wedding is cancelled thanks to Alexander, then she encounters an old friend, Patrick, who reminds her of who she used to be. Also, she has a spare ticket for her honeymoon, does a trip with Patrick will be a way to mend her heart?
  • Widowland by C.J. Carey: 1953 is the coronation year of Edward VIII; he is the King after an alliance between Great Britain and Germany thirteen years ago. However, the real power is vested in Alfred Rosenberg, Britain’s Protector, who decided to use Britain as a petri dish for the ideal society. This means for the women to be divide into several castes according to age, heritage, reproductive status and physical characteristics. In this story, we follow Rose, who belongs to the elite caste of Gelis. She works at the Ministry of Culture, rewriting literature to correct the views of the past. She is asked to investigate the insurgency that has been seen across the country. So she is sent to talk to the women of the Widowland, the lower cast who are known to not fear anything. Before the Leader arrives for the Coronation ceremony, Rose must find the source of this rebellion.

My experience

As I wanted an easy week, I take my time to read those books. I really liked the fact that you choose your goals or prompts for this readathon. I had a great time on Twitter, and it was fun to see the eclectic choice of books and prompts.

I liked the fact that you can do whatever you want, just do the thing. Even if you have one week to do it, it’s a chill readathon; I didn’t pressure myself to finish a book. I think it’s the fact that you decide what you want to read; if you don’t like it, you change the book or the prompts/goals.

If in the future Ashleigh is doing it again, I will participate for sure. It’s an excellent way to read your books!

I cannot wait to do a new readathon; I like doing those readathons as you surpass yourself. And you, have you already participate in one readathon? Or do you want to do it? Which one?

If you have any experience with this kind of readathon, don’t hesitate to share it in the comment.

Bye, bye

Liz.
