heartstopper volume 4 by Alice Oseman

38th book of 2021

Fourth book in Heartstopper series

Reading period: May 08th 2021

Summary

Charlie didn’t think Nick could ever like him back, but now they’re officially boyfriends. Charlie’s beginning to feel ready to say those three little words: I love you.

Nick’s been feeling the same, but he’s got a lot on his mind – not least coming out to his dad, and the fact that Charlie might have an eating disorder.

As summer turns to autumn and a new school year begins, Charlie and Nick are about to learn a lot about what love means.

Heartstopper is about love, friendship, loyalty and mental illness. It encompasses all the small stories of Nick and Charlie’s lives that together make up something larger, which speaks to all of us.

Review

Warning: despictions of mental health issues including anorexia and self-harm.

I am so happy to be back with Nick and Charlie and all their friends and family.

I found this one darker than the previous ones, but it was predictable as the end of volume 3 hinted at it. Was I okay while reading it? NO! But I love how the relationship between Nick and Charlie evolves with this problem.

Also, I like how Alice Oseman reaches this subject which is a difficult one. I think it’s well-done and the fact that you see it through Nick’s eyes was interesting.

I cannot wait for next year to continue this series (and I know that it’s a web series, but I don’t want to read it like that.)

Liz.
