bookoplathon March 2021

Hello everyone,

Last Friday, I decided at the last minute to participate in my very first 48h readathon. For people who follow me since last year, it’s not the first readathon that I am doing as I have done the Magical Readathon in April 2020 hosted by BookRoast (her youtube channel). But also, the Reading Rush in July 2020 hosted by Ariel Bisset and Raeleen Lemay.

This time it’s hosted by the booktuber Becca & The Books (her youtube channel). It’s during the month of March, starts the 20th and finishes the 21st. In this readathon, you have 48 hours to read books following 8 prompts; you can double the prompts for one book. However, there is a catch, and it’s that you start the readathon with only 2 prompts out of 8. They come by two, and each pair is revealed every 12 hours, so you cannot prepare a specific TBR for this readathon.

This year, the whole 48 hours were live-streamed, each live last 4 hours and hosted by different booktubers with guests. I watch most of the lives, and it was a great time as it was like doing reading sprints and talk with friends. It was like a big slumber party which last for 48 hours.

The prompts

The prompts were based on two boards of Becca’s Bookopoly, her TBR game. One of them was general and the other a lot more detailed, which was great as it helps you choose the books you wanted to read. Here is the list of the eight prompts:

  • Dark Cover
  • Fantasy
  • POC rep
  • Contemporary
  • First book in a series
  • Chance card*
  • Other**
  • Set in the present

*The chance card was to take 5 books that you would like to read and 5 that you’re not in a hurry to read and randomized them to draw one.

** For “other”, you need to read a genre besides your favourite ones.

The books

I decide to not overwelmed myself and just do one book = two prompts rule. Did I stick to it? Obviously, no!

I read a total of four books, which mean that seven out of eight prompts were completed. To complete the eight one, I would have had to read a fifth book, and I didn’t have the energy to do it, even if I knew which one I wanted to read.

Here is the list of the books I read with the prompt correspondent (the book that I couldn’t read is strikethrough):

  • The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner (Dark cover)
  • Spellslinger by Sebastien de Castell (Fantasy)
  • Fat Chance, Charlie Vega by Crystal Maldonado (POC rep)
  • Fat Chance, Charlie Vega by Crystal Maldonado (Contemporary)
  • Spellslinger by Sebastien de Castell (First book in a series)
  • Dearly: Poems by Margaret Atwood (Chance card)
  • Dearly: Poems by Margaret Atwood (Other)
  • The Divines by Ellie Eaton (Set in the present)

My experience

It was a challenge, and to tell you, I was exhausted at the end. However, it was so rewarding to do it. Now I am in a state where I want to do it again right away, and I am too exhausted to read a single book.

In the future, I will do it again, but I will change some of the things I have done. First, I will nap before starting the readathon; I was exhausted after the first four hours. Second, I will prepare more short books, mostly my books were between 257 pages and 391 pages, it’s too much. I need to mix them with smaller books like mangas/comics.

I cannot wait to do it again; I like doing those readathons as you surpass yourself. And you, have you already participate in one readathon? Or do you want to do it? Which one?

If you have any experience with this kind of readathon, don’t hesitate to share it in the comment.

Bye, bye

Liz.
