6th book of 2021

Reading period: Jan 07th 2021 – Jan 12th 2021

Summary

The Library of the Unwritten in Hell was saved from total devastation, but hundreds of potential books were destroyed. Former librarian Claire and Brevity the muse feel the loss of those stories, and are trying to adjust to their new roles within the Arcane Wing and Library, respectively. But when the remains of those books begin to leak a strange ink, Claire realizes that the Library has kept secrets from Hell–and from its own librarians.

Claire and Brevity are immediately at odds in their approach to the ink, and the potential power that it represents has not gone unnoticed. When a representative from the Muses Corps arrives at the Library to advise Brevity, the angel Rami and the erstwhile Hero hunt for answers in other realms. The true nature of the ink could fundamentally alter the afterlife for good or ill, but it entirely depends on who is left to hold the pen.

Review

I have mixed feeling for this second book of the Hell’s Library series.

I was happy to be back with these characters, even if I am sad as I like Leto and he is not here anymore. I also like the character development for Ramiel and Hero. However, I was surprised by Claire behaviour; it bothers me while I was reading.

The plot in itself was interesting and unique to read, but transparent. Contrary to the first book plot that surprised me from the beginning to the end, I guessed everything. I found the whole, a little too slow for my taste, and this time the different POVs was too much.

I found this book more of a companion to the first book rather than a sequel.

Nevertheless, I was astonished by the world, which is a lot wider than I thought. I want to know much more about it; it’s well described as well as logical.

Also, the end was heartwarming. There was a softness to it, even if it brings tears to my eyes. I was happy with this ending and couldn’t think of a better one.

I was happy to find a new author with this series, and I cannot wait for a new book.

Liz.
