My Olympus TBR game

For some months, I was thinking of a TBR game that I will help me to choose my next reads. I decided to create one based on Greek mythology.

Mythologies are a big part of my life as I always was interested in them. I would read, search, do a presentation about them. I was introduced to mythologies via the Greek one. That’s why I choose this one as it has a special place in my life.

As you can see in the picture, you have a board and cards and a box with folded papers.

The board is in a circle, and you have a total of 24 squares. You have 15 gods/goddesses cases, 1 Titanomachy case, 2 monsters cases, 2 ambrosia cases, 2 half god cases, 1 Olympus case and 1 start case.

There are cards for the gods/goddesses and for the monsters. For the gods/goddesses, they each have 5 cards with the instruction to follow for choosing a book, except for Persephone who only has one card. For the monsters, there is 9 of them (Cerberus, Medusa, Sphinx, Minotaur, Hydra, Hesiodic Cyclopes, Homeric Cyclopes, Cyclopean wall-builders, Chimera.) If you defeat the monster, by reading the book, you can earn a bonus card which can be use to change a book in your TBR.

The folded papers are all the books that I have on my “unread” shelf. I will draw a piece from this box if needed.

For the rules, it’s easy!

  • You play this TBR game with 2 dices and go from Zeus to Hades (I know that Persephone and Hades aren’t part of the Olympus, but he is part of the main god and I wanted to do symmetry with Zeus and Hera.)
  • Each time you are on a god/dryad case, you draw a card corresponding to this god/goddess where you have a prompt. You also draw a card when you are on a monster case.
  • For the Titanomachy case, you read a book that is more than 350 pages.
  • For ambrosia, you reroll the dice.
  • For half-god, you draw the next book.
  • For Olympus, each god/goddess is associate to a number, and you use a randomiser. You choose a card from the god/goddess select.
  • If you fall on start, you choose the book you want.
  • If you start a book but didn’t finish it at the end of the month, you should use it as a priority in your draw lots. If it doesn’t fit at all, you add it to your TBR (as a +1 book.) If you didn’t read a book from your TBR, you add it to your TBR (as a +1 book.)

And you, how do you choose your next book or your monthly TBR? Do you choose them with a TBR game or random? Tell me!

You can use this game for you, but if you want to use it publicly, don’t forget to tell me and link my blog or my insta (@of_books_and_museums)

Liz.
