Thirty third book of 2020

Reading period: Apr 20th 2020 – Apr 24th 2020

Summary

The bride ‧ The plus one ‧ The best man ‧ The wedding planner ‧ The bridesmaid ‧ The body

On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine, or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

But perfection is for plans, and people are all too human. As the champagne is popped and the festivities begin, resentments and petty jealousies begin to mingle with the reminiscences and well wishes. The groomsmen begin the drinking game from their school days. The bridesmaid not-so-accidentally ruins her dress. The bride’s oldest (male) friend gives an uncomfortably caring toast.

And then someone turns up dead. Who didn’t wish the happy couple well? And perhaps more important, why?

This book is for the O.W.L.s readathon, it stands for the Defense Against the Dark Arts where I needed to read a book sets at the sea/coast.

Review

I started this book after I decided to DNF the book I initially choose to read for this prompt.

This book is one of my favourite this year. You have all the elements for a good mystery/thriller book. Secrets, glamour, celebrity, perfection and isolate island make a great cocktail for a murder.

The thing that I liked in this book was the change in point of view. I feel that it helps a lot to understand everything that is happening and helping you to make hypotheses. These viewpoints help you to see interactions between the characters, and some people are as dark and unpredictable as the island which hold the wedding.

The tension is so well built, I am astonished by how the author makes you doubt about everything, even the murder. It is slowly built, but it serves the story.

I strongly recommend this book if you love mystery and thriller. I surely will read the other book from this author.

Liz.
