little women by Louisa May Alcott

Thirty first book of 2020

Reading period: Apr 05th 2020 – Apr 16th 2020

Summary

Meg, Jo, Amy, and Beth – four “little women” enduring hardships and enjoying adventures in Civil War New England. The charming story of the March sisters, Little Women has been adored by generations. Readers have rooted for Laurie in his pursuit of Jo’s hand, cried over little Beth’s death, and dreamed of traveling through Europe with old Aunt March and Amy. Future writers have found inspiration in Jo’s devotion to her writing.

This book is for the O.W.L.s readathon, it stands for the Arithmancy exam where I needed to read a book outside my favourite genre.

Review

It’s a book that I wanted to read for a long time, but I was kind of afraid of it. Indeed, I never read the classic book that was written before 1900, the last time I read one it was in 2017. Usually, I am not afraid of a big book, but when it comes to classics, I am.

At the start, I loved all the sisters you can feel the bond they have between each other, even if they have arguments they finished to forgive (thanks to their mom.)
Nevertheless, as I continue to read the story, I start to be more attached to Beth, Jo and Amy. I love the unique complicity that Jo and Beth have they are so complementary. I like how Amy evolves from a little pest to a strong and assertive woman who knows what she wants and will do anything to achieve her aim. I relate to Jo at the end of the book as she goes through a significant change.

The other main character is Laurie; he makes me laugh. The relationship he develops with the March family is so precious.

I love how you can follow them as they evolve in the world during some years. You see that even in a year you can change a lot.

Overall, I came out of my fear to read it, and I am so happy about it. I really liked it.

Liz.
